Information Software Technology
"People can expect to work and live in environments requiring highly developed levels of computing and technological literacy. Current technologies are becoming obsolete at a rapid rate and new generations will need to be flexible to accommodate changes as they emerge. It is important that students learn about, choose and use appropriate information and software technology and develop an informed awareness of its capacities, scope, limitations and implication. The study of Information and Software Technology assists students to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to solve problems in real life contexts."
The Information & Software Technology course in Years 9 & 10 builds on the Technology (Mandatory) Course in Years 7-8 to develop an understanding and an appreciation of Information Technology as an integral part of modern society. It is an excellent starting point to learn about Information Technology and it is not necessary to have previous computing experience or to have a computer system at home to successfully undertake this course.
The content of the Information and Software Technology Years 7-10 Syllabus comprises 5 core topics and a range of option topics. For each option topic students develop specialised knowledge of: past, current and emerging technologies, data, hardware, software and people involved in the field of information and software technology.
The option topics include:
- Artificial Intelligence
- Simulation and Modeling
- Authoring and Multimedia
- Database Design
- Digital Media
- The Internet and Website Development
- Networking Systems,
- Robotics and Automated Systems
- Software Development and Programming.
Although there is an important theoretical component to the course, Information & Software Technology is largely "hands on" with the majority of assessment items for each option topic being project based, providing students with an opportunity to develop information and software technology solutions to "real world" applications both individually and in small groups.
With excellent resources, we can ensure that students have individual access to the latest hardware, software and communications technology, to maximize their skill development and to foster an appreciation and enjoyment of learning about current and emerging technologies.
Information and Software Technology Years 9-10 provides a unique opportunity to further develop Information and Communication Technology (ICT) skills, by addressing each of the 10 core competencies that are to be assessed in the School Certificate.
As a result of studying this course, students will be well equipped to continue further education, not only in Information Technology, but also in all other subjects, all of which now contain Information Technology components as part of their course.
Both in the workplace and on a personal level, the study of Information & Software Technology will also assist in students becoming aware of the technological world in which they live and to prepare them for the inevitable future developments in the exciting and challenging field of information and software technology within our modern society.
