Japanese

Learning a new language like Japanese can be both fun and challenging. It is also a valuable skill that you can use in many different social and travel situations here in Australia and overseas.

If you study Japanese in years 9 and 10, you will learn:

  • to understand Japanese spoken at a reasonable speed within a range of simple, everyday situations;
  • to speak Japanese with accurate pronunciation in simple, everyday situations;
  • to read simple Japanese, such as that found in advertisements, short stories, menus, comics etc.
  • to write simply and accurately within the areas outlined in the syllabus, for example letters to Japanese penfriends, a diary and travel journal.

You will learn about life and travelling in Japan, the customs of the Japanese people, everyday things like food, school life, and entertainment.

To help you learn to use Japanese in "real-life" situations, lessons use audio and video tapes, games, role-plays and songs.

If you plan to study Japanese at 2 Unit level for the HSC you must do Japanese in Years 9 and 10.
